Characteristic
AISI 309S stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel . Cited properties are appropriate for the annealed condition. S30908 is the UNS number. It contains less nickel in its composition , moderately low tensile strength and lower amount of carbon in its composition among the wrought austenitic stainless steels thus utilization in areas where high temperature gases may posea problem. Type 309S is additionally characterized by its resistance to oxidation and creep, along with its ability to withstand high temperatures. Moist environmentshave no effect on it, due to the higher levels of nickel and chromium in its makeup. Because of this, it is often utilized in marine environments in place of StainlessSteel 304, as it displays a higher resistance. Thermal performance
309S stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel with excellent corrosion and heat resistance. The thermal properties of 309S stainless steel include high melting point, high thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion. These properties make 309S ideal for high temperature applications, such as furnaces and industrial heat exchangers.
Oxidation resistance
309S has a maximum carbon content of 0.08%, while grades 304 and 310 have a carbon content of 0.04% and 0.05%, respectively. For this reason, 309S is commonly used in welding applications that require frequent fuses, such as the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. In addition, 309S has good oxidation resistance and can withstand temperatures up to 1900°F before scaling.
